DC’S HOMETOWN FAVORITE

The most historically and scientifically accurate beer revival.

Heurich House Museum x Right Proper Brewing Company

The Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. Senate Beer brand was popularized in the 1890s, survived Prohibition, and was produced until 1956.

The Heurich House Museum partnered with DC’s Right Proper Brewing Company, who brewed the first Senate Beer to be available for public sale since the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. ended the brand. A limited number of cans became available in July 2019.

The differences between the original Senate Beer and this revival come down to things like water chemistry and extinct yeast strains.

When you drink Senate Beer today, you’ll be drinking as close to Christian Heurich’s Senate Beer as you ever could.

At the park…85 years later.

While enjoying a Senators game with a cold Heurich brew was possible from home or at a local bar, it was not an option at the Senators’ home stadium itself. Griffith Stadium, now the site of the Howard University Hospital, was a dry stadium, thanks to the efforts of Senators owner Clark Griffith. After his death in 1956, the stadium began to allow alcohol sales on-site. Unfortunately, it was too late for visitors to enjoy a cold Old Georgetown or Senate Beer as the Chr. Heurich Brewery had officially shut its doors earlier the same year.

In April 2021, Senate Beer became available on draft at Nationals Park in Section 130.
